spring where there's a tragedy earlier today. a 1 1/2-year-old boy managed to get himself tangled in the cords of window shades. and he did not survive. >> it appears to be a tragic accident. they found the little boy tangled up in the drapery cord in the bedroom where his bed is. >> the baby got tangled inside of it. we don't know how, because we weren't there. detectives are here, it's crazy. >> the initial information that we have is that they had put him down for a nap and somehow he gotten out of his crib and was playing with the cord and some how got caught up into it. they immediately began cpr on him and they felt that the situation was so urgent that they took the child to a local hospital without waiting for fire rescue to arrive. >> one day after that murder suicide at baltimore's johns hopkins hospital, we took a closer look at security inside our own local hospitals. turns out there are no metal

detectors at the howard university hospitals, however, there are 33 security guards manning the doors and patrolling the halls. the hospital did away with uniformed officers that considerlied guns. now the security officers carry collapsible batons. studies show hospital violence is on the rise. so security officers focus on training to combat the problem. >> whether there's an active shooter, a bomb threat, whether it's any low patient and you have to train to it each and every day. >> according to the bureau of labor statistics, 131 people were killed conducting healthcare or social services between 1997 and 2008. even though local security officers admit that things like this one in baltimore yesterday are very rare. a water main replacement project in silver spring turned into a bit of a nightmare for a family. now this started with an e-mail to 9news and when we showed up, a plumber was just finishing up

touched a nerve among people who have to care for elderly loved ones who are suffering with dementia. our own peggy fox whose mother has alzheimer's learned valuable lessons from a man who had to quit his job to take care of his mom. >> when mom was more active, she ran away a lot. >> that was in teddy's earlier stages of alzheimer's. she was diagnosed 13 years ago. she barely speaks now. and she can do nothing for herself. her 57-year-old son, jerome bathes her and changes her. >> she wears depends. you know, i have gloves that i use. i have the wipes. >> and he puts her in a safe bed at night. >> she can't climb over it. >> for years now, it's been like taking care of an infant. >> sometimes i didn't sleep at all. >> and then there were the escapes. >> this window right here was to her bedroom and she managed to crawl out that bedroom and fall down against the brick steps below and shatter her

right ankle. >> after the ankle injury, jerome realized his mother couldn't be left home alone. he soon quit his job to stay home with her full-time. >> jerome understands how a care giver could snap. >> i got to the point where i needed help. i went to the county services and i asked to speak to a psychologist. a lot of people say she is already dead because she is not who she was. i don't understand that. >> the alzheimer's foundation with which takes her in during the day has been a god send to them. so have friends and support groups. >> when she can't talk anymore, you'll miss it. you'll miss it. right teddy? talking to me a different way. >> in fairfax, peggy fox, 9news now. wow. jerome says it took him eight years to actually ask for the help he needed. he says anybody taking care of a loved one with dementia aught to seek help sooner than that.

investigators now know at least part of the cause of that deadly mine explosion in west virginia, more than 1400 samples collected in the mine show excessive amounts of highly explosive coal dust. now that backs up preliminary findings that a mix of methane and coal dust is what caused the blast. the april explosion in the big branch mine killed 29 men and it was the deadliest accident in a u.s. coal mine since 1970. now faces civil and criminal investigations. and for the second straight day, san bruno school was evacuated after teachers reported smelling gas in their classrooms. now both cases turned out to be false alarms and officials say that smell likely came from heaters or perhaps furnaces that had been turned on. pg and e says they are getting more calls about gas leaks since that explosion last week. and in the wake of that blast,

difficult and very costly -- >> he says if someone uses the code, they will take legal action. in washington, i'm lindsey, 9news now. >> we know how that worked out for the music industry. according to a study by the institute of policy invasion, the motion picture association of america lost $6.1 million and that was back in 2005. cracking codes like this is not brand-new. a few years ago, hackers found a way to find copies of regular dvd's. they used a sharpy marker to black out the part of the dvd that kept people from making a copy. he says he was just trying to protect his little girl, but now a florida father is facing charges of disorderly conduct and disturbing a school function after he literally went off on a group of middle school students. police say 42-year-old james jones stormed on to a school bus and actually threatened to kill a group of students after

they bullied his special needs daughter. but what dad wouldn't want to find out, but what dad wouldn't want to find out who put open condoms on his little girl. jones said i'm just sticking up for my daughter. that rampage was caught on the bus' surveillance tape. >> everybody sit down. >> tell me which one. show me which on [ inaudible ] >> wow. jones is now out of jail on $2,000 bond. he is sorry, he admits he is at fault for this. jones should have called them before taking things into his own hands. he says he had already complained about it and nothing was done. so, what do you think? did jones go too far or is there any such thing as too far when it comes to protecting your own kids? jones says he complained to the school, but nothing was done. tell us your thoughts.
